Uncompressed Video takes up a temendous amount of computer disc space. Even DVCAM/DV format video which is compressed when it is acquired still uses 2 gigabytes of disc space for 9 minutes of video.

In order to put video on a DVD,CD-ROM or on the web it must be compressed so that it takes up less space.

There are many types of compression methods which produce different types of digital file formats and file sizes. Usually where your intended audience is going to view the video/audio determines which methods are used to compress your video. New formats are being developed all the time. Some of the older digital file formats are being replaced by newer more efficient formats.
